gw,

How could that have hurt the troops?

That's what they said, but what they probably meant is hurt sales and membership $$$, if the members / customers / sponsors are outraged at something that may be said on their podium.

But the motivation is irrelevant. It their podium, and they have a freedom of speech who to put on it, or not to put anyone on the podium.

Where did the "promote drugs" comment come from?

Well, not exactly promote drugs, but legalize marijuana. I am not sure this would be something that the baseball hall of fame would like to be associated with. Let's just take that issue, which will hopefully not be as emotional. Is it the right of the the baseball hall of fame to make sure that no one from their podium is promoting legalization of marijuana?
