The left in Israel also became a "dovish" left maybe around this time too. Before that left and right were more on economic grounds in Israel. I don't think the break happened exactly in 1982 but that certainly accelerated things with the emergence of Shalom Akhshayv. There wasn't a swing to the right so much as a hawk-dove polarization.
