For what it means to be part Native American in America these days I recommend Louise Erdrich, who writes like an angel. Her tribe is Turtle Mountain Ojibwe, same as mine, but she's closer to it. She's enrolled, I am not and can't be, not close enough.

My great grandmother passed up the opportunity to enroll because her Pennsylvania Dutch husband didn't want people to know he was married to a squaw.

To be honest, I am too far from all that to have to deal with it in my daily life. My great grandmother moved away, and passed for white, and now I am white.

If my great grandmother had been black, rather than Native American, in the old days I wouldn't be white. Octaroon. Illegal to marry a white man in Virginia until 1967.

Weird, isn't it?
