But interfering with the middle east would draw similar criticism, may be in another form.

And it has. There's always talk from certain corners of the political spectrum about white American kids going off to "bomb brown people again." It's like Original Sin. If you're white, or percieved to be a white man's nation, you are implicitly racist according to some people. But when it comes to black/white relations, look out. Really gets some people worked up double frothy.

Yes, we are taking a beating about it, and it will continue to happen. Interesting that the beating is as bad from the left here as it is from overseas, IMO. We were perfectly willing to use the ME as our filling station and let the Despots run it, but they wouldn't leave us alone. 911 Changed everything in a way that you, living in Hong Kong, can never fully comprehend. You tell us there are things about China we will never understand. Same back at ya.

So now we are forced to try to clean up the mess over there, dragging our left and Europe along, kicking and screaming. I can assure you that Bush didn't get elected with the idea that he would save the ME. The ME kicked his door down and forced him to face up to the task.

The amazing thing is that he turned out to be precisely the guy we needed to do it. I would have never guessed it when he was elected. I thought he was a Texas "klutz," like most others here.
