Drive Image programs.

Could someone tell me what these programs do and the purpose?

To make a restorable image of you hard drive. Most people use them to be able to restore an exact image of the operating system to a (ideally) time when everything was just like you wanted. Let's say you had a hard drive failure or something happens and you lost all your data. System restore rolls back your computer to a time before you encountered a problem with your operating system but it will not restore lost data nor help in the event of a failure. System Restore can also fail whereas an image that you have tested and written to a cd or a second hard drive will more than likely be good. With a drive image program you can be back in business with a known good operating system in a matter of minutes.

Disclaimer: I have never used an image program...just read about them.
