I humbly suggest that what is going on here is nothing less than what happened circa 300 BC, with Alexander's conquest of the whole Middle East. This conquest unleashed a cultural cross pollination that lasted some 1000 years and is still felt today. The parallels to be drawn are NOT those of British Imperial conquests related the the destruction of the Ottoman Empire.

The parallels to Alexanders period are striking, as are some of the differences. Perhaps, in the future I will develop them. Basic similarities are that France, Germany, and Russia represent the ancient Athens, Sparta, and Thebes in their dotage and decline. The differences are that the US represents only an unsophisticated (though well organizied) barbarian militarist culture. I submit, that the US represents the absolute pinnacle of European cultural ideals, and is robust in it's staying power.

What is fascinating to me now, is that the "Left" and "European" sentiment have manuevered themselves into the uneviable position of demanding a US "mandate" in Iraq.

Hi all; This is a reminder of what Mark Steyn was saying back on April 12th:

A year from now, Basra will have a lower crime rate than most London boroughs.
...
There will be terrible acts of suicide-bomber depravity in the months ahead, but no widespread resentment at or resistance of the Western military presence.
...
Effective immediately, Palestinian suicide bombers are no longer subsidised by Baghdad; in Jordan, the Saddamite boot is off the Hashemite windpipe; Syria is under notice to behave. Despite the best efforts of Western doom-mongers to rouse the Arab street, its attitude will remain: start the jihad without me.
...
The oil business will now be opened up to competitive tender. ... The liberation of Iraq is a victory for real markets over French cronyism.
...
"Weapons of Mass Destruction. Remember them? Not a single one has yet been found" (Bill Neely, ITV, April 10). MBITRW: Actually, I almost wish this one were true.
...
In a year's time, Iraq will be, at a bare minimum, the least badly governed state in the Arab world and, at best, pleasant, civilised and thriving. In short: not a bad three weeks' work.
