And one of the constants is the degree to which the thread persona differs from the in person persona.

Yes, they are different. But, unless the poster has set out to create a phony persona online, I think the online version is truer. We tend to "let it all hang out" here in a way we never would in conversation if we were together. I was very hesitant about allowing my dance partner to read this thread because of that. At "Coconut Willies," it is all, "ya wanna dance?"

I think you know I had the unique experience of spending three days in San Diego in March of 2000 with about 40 "Gorilla and King" posters from all over the world. We had been posting for about two years. The posters not only got along as well as we had on the thread, they were exactly what we expected from dealing with each other online.

When you recharacterize my thoughts to someone else, you are, almost inevitably, more than slightly wrong.

Ahh, John. A little part of that is when I do it, it usually involves needling you to some extent. I know you are going to read it. But Bobby Burns sums up the other part.

Oh wad some power the giftie gie us
To see oursel's as others see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
And foolish notion.

Alas, you are not even YOUR thoughts. You are someone else's characterization of your posts, which are your attempt to reduce your thoughts to written form. Since there are people here who can characterize a thought like "We should not set a precedent for preemptive war" as "You support Saddam", the perception someone else has of your thoughts is bound to be warped. The more they disagree with you, the more their perception of you is going to be warped. It's a fascinating thing to watch.
