That was because quality control was at the top of the USA manufacturing agenda during WW2. The learnings were exported to Japan, they learnt it while corporate USA dumped it.

Nice to see it back in fashion:-)


The Deming story is a great example of how competition works. Army trained Deming. US business had no interest, so while the US ignored Japan, Deming help them create a killer manufacturing business. When Japan started to kick American butt in the '80's, Deming translated all the books back in English and sold it all to the US again. He produced results everywhere he worked. A true 20th century business genius.

I read the story of how the Japanese kicked our butt in the Auto Business in, "The Machine That Changed the World : The Story of Lean Production", by James Womack a few years ago. Wonderful account of what Deming accomplished.

His only aberration, IMO, was his dislike for any type of incentive pay.
