Pelosi was the one who came through against Bush for veterans. Hmm.

Republicans Buckle Under Pressure from Democrats to Restore Veterans' Funding

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi:
'This is a first step to doing the right thing, but it does not fix the drastic cuts that Republicans made to vital programs in their budget'

Washington, D.C.-- The U.S. House of Representatives this afternoon overwhelmingly passed a Democratic motion to reject cuts to education, health care, and veterans' programs.

"This vote is a repudiation by the Republicans of their own budget," said House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. "Americans value our veterans. We value education. We value access to quality health care. Passing a budget that cuts those priorities to pay for a huge tax cut -- that won't even benefit most Americans -- is quite simply, wrong."

After first speaking out against the Democratic motion to instruct conferees of a joint House-Senate conference committee on the budget, the Republicans reversed course and decided to support it when they realized they did not have the votes to defeat it.

"House Republicans passed a budget in the dead of night on March 21 that dishonors our veterans by making deep cuts in veterans' benefits," said Pelosi. "Today's vote to pass the Democratic motion to instruct conferees was the first step in doing the right thing for those veterans who have so courageously defended our country, and the thousands of future veterans who are now risking their lives in the Persian Gulf."

"But the vote is only a first step," Pelosi said. "It does not fix the drastic cuts that Republicans made to many vital programs. If they are truly committed to helping our veterans, our seniors, our farmers and our children, they would vote to fully restore funding for America's domestic priorities."

Background on the motion: The House Republican budget that was passed on March 21 included drastic cuts to vital programs such as health care, education and veterans' programs. The Democratic resolution passed today directs the conferees to restore the following cuts from the Republican budget:

$14.6 billion cuts to Veterans' benefits, specifically disability and education benefits;
$94 billion cuts to Medicaid, $2 billion cuts to State Children's Health Insurance Programs and $62 billion to Medicare programs;
$9.4 billion cuts to education, school lunches, and student loans;
$61.5 billion cuts in aid to working families and the disabled, specifically, Unemployment Insurance and the Earned Income Tax Credit;
$18.6 billion cuts to agriculture programs that help farmers, ranchers, and rural communities and Food Stamps that help low-income families.
