It's about time to start this multi-year move. Even the wrong Germans know that the Western front is moving East for very sound strategic reasons. Any behavior modification angle is purely coincidental but well-deserved.<g>

Every dollar in military spending we spend in those fledgling democracies in Eastern Europe creates more dollars in increased economic activity and improves stability. A few billion dollars a year is tip money in Germany despite its current status as the sick man of Europe. In contrast, a few billion dollars a year spent in Eastern Europe has an outsized impact and goes a very long way. Again, any negative impact on Germany's welfare state is purely coincidental but well-deserved.

This move is very good even for Russia which actually has had the best-performing stock market during the last 2 years driven primarily by the bull market for oil. I thought their recent moves at insurance reform (read as: more dynamic risk distribution) was a major step forward in developing a more entrepreneurial risk culture. It's just too bad that they keep on allowing German and French illusions to obscure their progress.

The best that the right German -- whose name, by the way, is Angela -- can probably do right now is have more influence (scale and timing) in this inexorable multi-year process.

Well, if we depart Germany its a good thing so far as I am concerned. Although I dont think the savings will be great as it is my understanding the German Govt pays the expenses of maintaining our troops there. We no longer have a need that I can see to be there, other than to provide good duty for our stationed troops.
If we got to be in Europe at all, outside of GB seems to me Spain would be more strategically located in relation to the middle East. Best place of all to me would be Iraq but I guess that wont fly with those Arabs. jdn
