International bid to strip Saddam of wealth

Saddam Hussein is facing an international effort to strip him of his ill-gotten wealth.

British finance chiefs have asked banks to examine Iraqi funds under their control in an effort to establish whether they may be part of Saddam's fortune.

His coffers are estimated at anything between £1.3 billion and £13 billion.

Tony Blair has personally ordered officials to research the extent of Saddam's wealth.

They told Mr Blair that even if Saddam's nest-egg is at the lower end of the estimated range, it would be the equivalent of 3% of his country's entire GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2002 - and make him four times richer than the Queen.

Downing Street believes Saddam has built 50 palaces and luxury residences since the end of the 1991 Gulf War and has around 100 in all.

Mr Blair's official spokesman said: "Saddam kept his people poor while making himself rich."

Saddam is thought to have hidden much of his wealth in bank accounts outside Iraq. The Bush administration seized £1 billion in Iraqi assets already frozen in the US when the invasion got under way. The UK has also frozen substantial funds.

Similarly, the Swiss government has frozen Iraqi government and corporate assets until the United Nations Security Council determines who is entitled to it.
