Wellllll since we are on a stockmarket investment bulletin board site, let me use this example:

Remember the bubble ? Remember CNBC ? Back during the height of the bubble, if any guest on CNBC DARED to say that stocks were overvalued by all historical measures or God forbid point out one stock in particular, CNBC would get a deluge of hate e-mail !! News stations, like all stations, make money selling advertisements. So rather than piss off their viewers, who clearly didn't want to hear the truth, CNBC basically became a bull market cheerleading station.

The news stations are covering the war the same way CNBC covered the bull market. For basically the same reason.

Telling the whole truth is not the media's top priority. They're not lying, but then again, neither is Al-Jazeera.
