E, I just didn't know the extent of the ransacking. I was amazed that the media seemed to be celebrating the looting - not of the museum, but of government offices.

In non-democratic societies, the tacit support given to repressive regimes from the middle and wealthier classes reflects their belief that the repression is needed to curb chaos and crime.

One of the aspects of the mis-rule of Saddam in Iraq was that his regime monopolized the use of violence in Iraq, then granted a franchise to his son and other privileged gangs to terrorize the remainder of society. With no end in sight.

Now the US military has seized the monopoly on violence in Iraq, I hope they realize they can't just implicitly grant the franchise to gangs, and leave everyone else defenseless. Which apparently happened for a few days, and hopefully will stop, somewhat late. But better late than never.
