The relative suddenness of the outbreak of SARS (it began in Nov '02), like that of anthrax that came soon enough after 11th Sept. '01), has made me rather suspicious, rightly or wrongly, about whether it occurred naturally or otherwise.

It was speculated that cockroaches (species "orientalis" or "americana") might have been responsible. To me that seems unlikely as cockroaches have co-existed with humans comensally and in comensal proximity for millennia!
