well,
Northanger Abbey is a spoof of gothic novels.
Emma is the most cynical about romantic illusions.
Pride and Prejudice is the best one to read when it comes to impressions about people- and the grounds of romance, and love. I'd read it first. I think jsut about anyone would enjoy it. Mansfield Park would also be a good novel to start with.

Sense and Sensibility is lovely- but imo S&S and Persuasion are the two least cynical. Persuasion is my favorite novel I think- but don't start with it.
