I think she thought the world was progressing in some moral/social way. I think she's being a bit too hard on the world. I think we may be progressing, but it's always a few steps forward and a few back- and you just have to hope it's one or two forward every 100 years or so, and that we don't blow ourselves up. My expectations are low for humanity- hers may be a trifle high. IMO, of course
