Or it was the perfect crime: Perpetrated by the Pentagon themselves since no one would ever suspect the establishment paid to defend the country and its institutions would do it.

Your post seems kind of tounge in cheeky. I doubt you actually believe all those steps that you laid out; although they are plausible, it would be the biggest conspiracy known to man. Doubtful it could be pulled off.

However, I do find the actions of the Bush Administration once the 9/11 terrorist attacks were underway to be highly suspect?!? Bush acts as though he's being given a sports score and shows no shock and asks no spontaneous questions as he learns that the biggest building in the country has been hit by an airplane and then continues to read to schoolchildren?!? Go Figure?!? Donald Rumsfeld, who's suppossed to be defending this country, works in his office throughout the entire attacks. The Head of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, General Meyers, another person who's sole duty is defense of our country, meets with Senator Max Cleland throughout the terrorist attacks. The reaction by these three important men, who are in charge of our nation's defenses, was underwhelming at best. Nothing was done to ensure their safety. They didn't go to any positions of authority where they could cooridinate a proper defense. What the hell do we pay them for anyway?

Add to that the fact that the military didn't scramble planes to defend Washington DC until 2 minutes before the Pentagon was hit. The first World Trade Center was hit over one hour before the Pentagon, yet no planes were scrambled to defend DC, even though it was known that a plane that had taken off from DC had been hijacked over Ohio and was turning around and flying back towards DC. You think that a knee-jerk reaction would be to scramble planes out of Andrews Air Force Base to defend DC?!?

The whole 9/11 thing stinks to high heavens. And yes, there are people who have benefited greatly as a result of 9/11. The defense establishment got a $50B increase. A whole new bureacracy was created, called Homeland Security, that serves as another funnel of public money into private coffers. President Bush went from a marginal President who was barely hitting 50% approval ratings to a solid leader with 90% approval ratings, overnight. The Republicans were able to capitalize on 9/11 to win the 2002 elections. I won't go as far as you and say that elements of our government carried out 9/11. But, I'd say that it is possible that they had an inkling that something was coming and just let it happen for their own selfish purposes.
