The bad news is that we might have lost an Army doing it at the start, due to lack of experience at the Officer Corps level. That's, of course, Atkinson's argument. The early phases of the African campaign are an Alphonse and Gaston bit if ever there was one. No one could get anything right and a lot of folk died as everyone learned how to do this thing called "war." And I was not aware, at least not genuinely aware, that our first foes in north Africa were the French. Petain's guys. Took a few days and more than a few deaths to get that straightened out.
