That's, of course, Atkinson's argument. The early phases of the African campaign are an Alphonse and Gaston bit if ever there was one. No one could get anything right and a lot of folk died as everyone learned how to do this thing called "war." And I was not aware, at least not genuinely aware, that our first foes in north Africa were the French. Petain's guys. Took a few days and more than a few deaths to get that straightened out.
