I don't think these domestic political arguments will lead the Bush folk to go to war with Syria all by themselves but I don't think they are absent from their reflections. I kid around about warming up the tanks for Syria, but I think the fear will work. We are going to force them to get out of Lebanon and quit supporting Hamas, that's for sure. Domestic politics is going to be the normal sausage grinding. I will hold off predicting 04. TSTT. Since I am halfway to Mount Rushmore with a hammer and chisel in hand, you may consider my opinion to be prejudiced. :>)

We will probably have to agree to disagree on this one. I have no doubt that some politics go into various decisions about the war (including timing), but I dont think they factor into the actual decision to go to war. I didnt believe in the "wag the dog" scenario for Clinton's Tomahawk strike and I dont believe it with Bush. Perhaps I'm not cynical enough, but even from a straight political angle, I dont think that a war with Syria or Iraq is going to be helpful politically. There was broad support for war with Iraq in '98, all Bush had to do was galvanise it. The situation with Syria (or Iran) would be entirely different. I think it will take years to prepare the domestic political situation for war with either of those countries. Of course, I dont think that political opposition would stop Bush from going to war if he decided that was the right thing to do....which is one reason why I like him. Slacker
