Torture is an unspeakable horror.

I take it in posting this you're providing support for the removal of the despicable Saddam regime? But if the use of torture is sufficient reason to remove a government, there's a long list waiting: Mexico, the Phillipines, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Namibia...

There are many evil regimes.

I don't know all the reasons Bush decided to remove Saddam, and of course it was a combination of reasons, not one alone, but let's be frank: the treatment of the Iraqi populace would've ranked very low on the list.

Nevertheless, the publicity this brings to the issue of torture by governments around the world and the abysmal record of signing the UN accord against torture is very valuable in helping to reduce the practice.
