You are of course right that the government is privy to information we aren't, and the advisors within government are expert on their areas in ways no ordinary citizen can be, and it's important always to remember that.

I don't think unquestioning acquiescence, following blindly, is right, however. If it were, America would still be a colony. Moreover, let's take it to an extreme: if the government announced it was going to invade Britain next week, would you just shrug and say "Must be right, I guess"? (Notice I didn't pick France for the example? ;-)

It's our duty to involve ourselves in the decisions our government takes. It must be done sincerely, with intellectual and emotional honesty, setting aside political biases (as well as can be done) and using the opportunity not to erode the strength of but rather shape the vision of the government.

So: no sniping, extra trust in difficult times and with difficult subjects, but not unquestioning following. JMO, of course ;-)

To clarify my own position, however, it is possible to question the rationale and justification for this war, yet support the troops themselves once war is engaged. It has never been a question in my mind which army I wanted to win!

Very well said.

Re "disagreements over issues between the right and left has caused people to truly hate the other side, so much in fact that sometimes they forget they are all on the same side, the side of freedom.", I thought Jon Stewart of The Early Show also put it well in light of current events:

"What a day!... The Iraqi people are starting to embrace the fact that Saddam's reign has ended. And no matter what side of the political spectrum you are on, if you are incapable of feeling at least a tiny amount of joy at watching ordinary Iraqis celebrate this, you are lost to the ideological left. And let me also add, if you are incapable of feeling badly that we even had to use force in the first place, you are ideologically lost to the right."
