About 3 years ago, i was introduced to the idea of public school education as cultural brainwashing. After 3 years of judging it from this perspective, I agree more than ever with the idea. Noam Chomsky explores this concept in his book, Understanding Power, and argues that compulsory education only serves an industrial society looking for well behaved, interchangable, factory workers.

<If people do not obey instructions, society falls apart.>

Conformity is a double edged sword. Useful when it curbs antisocial behavior and harnesses the power of unified efforts, harmful where it stifles creativity, innovation, etc. The ideal is to reach a balance, no?
