Until official notification, this is nothing more than he said, she said, they said ... >> My good friend, you can stay in a state of denial for the rest of your born days if it suits you. Chipset manufacturing to open published standards, whether proprietary or committee based, is NOT rocket science, and in fact it is dog eat dog and HIGHLY competitive. Its like golf. Who would have thunk that a left handed Canadian could master the game to the degree that he would spend the year wearing the most recognizable and prestigious green blazer in the world. Winners, master the technologies they deliver. Losers suck hind tit and order from Qualcomm and pay the exceptionally high margins that lull us Qualcomm shareholders into complacency. Unnamed official again. The Korea Times probably made him up, eh?The new 1X chipset will undergo final testing for commercial mobile handsets serviced by KTF, the nation’s second largest wireless carrier, according to a Samsung Electronics official. "We will produce a new mobile handset equipped with our own 1X chipset in October at the earliest" This official is named:On Tuesday, KT ICOM chief executive Cho Young-chu said the company is highly likely to use Samsung’s own dual-band, dual-mode (DBDM) chipset after the company launches the commercial operation of its 3G network next June. "We will use Qualcomm’s DBDM chipset in a test-run of 3G service next April, but Samsung’s chipset is also possible after the commercial service begins." BTW: In this clip of the September 5, 2003 article from the Korea Times where I first heard reference to Samsung delivering their own 1xRTT chipset based handsets relatively near term and from which I lifted the clips above, I think there is a (partial) mistake that I made when interpreting what the journalist stated: Message 17955794 I stated in my quick summary of that article: Samsung Chipsets for 1xRTT and WCDMA * Samsung 1xRTT * Samsung Dual-Mode GSM/WCDMA When I say "partial" mistake, what I mean is that when KT ICOM refers to Samsung's (or Qualcomm's) "DBDM chipset", they are talking about a bread and butter 1xRTT/WCDMA handset which they need more than they need a Dual-Mode GSM/WCDMA handset that will be used by roamers in their case (limited market). Samsung will most likely, IMO, develop both 1xRTT/WCDMA handsets for the Korean market, and develop Dual-Mode GSM/WCDMA handsets for the world market. They will continue to source from Qualcomm while they still have their training wheels on, but in order to compete with Nokia and Motorola they have to master 1xRTT and 1xEV-DV with both GSM EDGE/3GSM EDGE WCDMA to truly integrate a complete product range for the coming years ... which they will do. The mythology of the Qualcomm threads dictates that Samsung will only use their own chips on the low end. The 3rd most profitable IT company in the world can sneeze at Qualcomm in that regard and so can the 4th largest. Stabalize the initial; chip and work up the ladder. Don't hold your breath waiting for formal announcements from Samsung. You may never know what Samsung model has a Samsung designed 1xRTT chipset or a Qualcomm chipset, and Samsung will enjoy, to its fullest, the fact that they now have accomplished what Nokia already accomplished and that they can squeeze Qualcomm 16 ways from Sunday. They are considerably more advanced than the peanut factory in San Diego, both R&D wise, and marketing wise. Always remember that they are the single company most responsible for commercializing IS-95A, IB-95B, and IS-95C. - Eric -
