NVLS $hit the bed.....looks like the trap door got sprung on the bulls once again! Will they ever learn?<

here are some CC notes. even though their business would suck anyway, SARS is really having an impact.

The Wrap-Up
04/14/03 05:38 PM EDT
Although NVLS had a decent Q1, the tone of the call was pretty negative for next quarter, due to the war and SARS. The CEO believes/hopes that it is a one-quarter negative blip and that once people get over the initial hysteria of SARS, they will start to travel again, and business can resume. Other semiconductor and capital equipment companies are likely to have been affected in the same negative way.

SARS, Real and Hysterical
04/14/03 05:23 PM EDT

Q: Why do you think that the SARS problem will be corrected by the third quarter?

A: I didn't say that, but right now it seems like it is hysteria.

Q: Do you think there are any company-specific issues in your order guidance, or do you expect other companies to guide similarly?

A: It is definitely not company-specific.

No positions.

The Competitive Angle
04/14/03 05:19 PM EDT

Q: What was the order number for Q1?

A: Orders were $243.7 million.

Q: Any significant competitive wins during the quarter?

A: We have had significant competitive wins, but we don't disclose those individually.

No positions.

When the SARS Scare Clears
04/14/03 05:08 PM EDT
Q: It seems like there is some pent-up demand for orders, and they should improve after the SARS scare improves -- would you say that?

A: Yes, it seems that way to me.

Q: Can you comment on your cost plans, and do you plan on doing additional restructuring?

A: It's not planned at this time. However, if business were to continue to weaken due to SARs, we would consider restructuring.

No positions.

A Far-Reaching Worry
04/14/03 05:03 PM EDT

Q: You said orders would be down in all regions, not just Asia. Can you explain?

A: The world is too interlinked, especially in the electronics business. Asia is a major factor in terms of business interactions with customers and suppliers for capital equipment and semiconductors.

No positions.

The SARS Effect
04/14/03 04:58 PM EDT

Q: Foundries seem to be seeing some life. Has that positively affected your business?

A: In the recent past, the foundries have been tentative.(CEO is really emphasizing the significance of the halt in business interaction in Asia, due to SARS.)

CEO is emphasizing the negative impact of SARS on all business interactions in Asia.

Business has basically come to a halt in Asia. He's expecting revenue to be down next quarter.

No positions.

Been Down So Long
04/14/03 04:53 PM EDT
Q: What are your expectations for business in the second half?

A: The question is, how long can business be down? Right now the war and SARS are negatively affecting business.

No positions.

Caution and Margin Erosion
04/14/03 04:50 PM EDT

Customers are being cautious. Asia has been particularly affected by SARS. In the past two weeks NVLS has had a significant decrease on bookings. Next-quarter guidance: Bookings of $188 million, $215 million shipments, $238 million in revenue and 5 cents in earnings, due to gross margin erosion.

Q: Can you give an idea of the gross margin erosion?

A: The decline could be a couple of percentage points. We're early in the quarter, so we'll try to work on it. It will probably decline by a percent or two.

No positions.

Trends in Global Sales
04/14/03 04:46 PM EDT

CEO comments: Bookings were up in Europe and Greater China but were down 10% sequentially in the U.S. Bookings were flat in Japan and Korea.

No positions.

Up Across the Board
04/14/03 04:38 PM EDT
Bookings, shipments and revenues all increased from last quarter. Gross margins increased to 46.1% from 44.1% last quarter, due mostly to manufacturing efficiencies on higher revenue.

Previewing the Call
04/14/03 04:20 PM EDT

Novellus (NVLS:Nasdaq) reported Q1 revenue of $238.4 million, which was slightly better than the consensus estimate of $234 million. Earnings of 8 cents were a penny better than consensus. Stay tuned for the call that starts at 4:30.
