I know he was a social conservative on a personal level, but he never tried to legislate social issues, in California or nationally. He allowed the religious right to contribute to republican causes but wouldn't be seen with them in public forums at least in California, I do know that. He kept his personal views to himself from what I could see. It was Dan Quayle who really started overtly vocalizing the republican social agenda when he was VP after Reagan was gone. I guess that was 88 at the republican convention? The republican party was completely divided after that and there are some states like California that they have lost forever unless something really changes.
