My view is there is 6 billion of us now. Huge surface area of human skin to seek out new viruses and bugs. So now is different. Besides, (say) 10% death rate in the past was regarded as no big deal.

It's not as if something terrible can't happen. There is no PPT for the human race except our own medical skills and discipline. Flu has been going around for a long time, and this version looks bad if it gets out and about big time..

AIDS is a bit more difficult to contract, though, unless you are into exchanging body fluids with a large number of new people every day. A contagious respiratory disease is far easier to contract.
