Re CDMA vs GSM and "that's an interesting question. If you asked 10 random experts, perhaps 7 or 8 would agree with us. 2 or 3 would agree with you. We'll see who's right."

That's kind of how folks are voting with their handsets too, isn't it?

<The authors of the piece were bigshot scientists--world-class types>

Tekuboi-san, big-shot scientists don't play dice with the universe, nor do they conduct votes to decide the veracity of a scientific principle.

Your big-shot scientist is obviously a random mutant on a losing [loosing in American] roll of the dice.

PS: John, is right that the handset buyers have been voting with the big-shot. But that is all past. What they do over the next decade is what will matter. Profits are not made from the past, they are made in the future. Predicting and creating the future is the business of investors.

What article were you reading?

As far as I can tell, we have a tremendous lead over the Euros on geo-positioning. The 30 satellites envisioned by Galileo won't be operating until 2008. They'll have a 1- meter level of precision; GPS will have a 3-meter level by 2005, and there are plans to continue to improve it. So GPS doesn't work in Upper Left Volta, big deal.

The Euros are clearly concerned about a monopoly--they know all about that, don't they?--especially one that can be turned on and off at will despite our protests to the contrary.

On reflection, I think it's possible that the Galileo initiative is another arrow in the GSM Cabal's quiver.

Differentiate GSM/Euro wireless positioning from US wireless, which will be using GPS. Perhaps charge a fee or limit access.

I see that the State Department's efforts to promote cooperation between Galileo and GPS have essentially gone nowhere for a few years now. The latest friction won't help.

Star Wars II.

Keep hoping that the Arianes keep on exploding. French rocket scientists????
