GRIDS was the precursor to AIDS, but they took out the "GR" because it stood for Gay Related. Our government had to make it PC dontcha know, which led to the blood bank disaster accepting donations from homosexual men. Of course, this was the death knell for hemophiliacs and anyone else who was unfortunate enough to receive multiple transfusions at the time.

When AIDS was first diagnosed in the spring of 1981, it was called gay-related-immunodeficiency syndrome (GRIDS) when young homosexual males in California were diagnosed with a rare type of pneumonia, a parasitic infection of the lungs and young homosexual males in New York University were contracting Kaposi's sarcoma, a slow-growing cancer formerly seen only in elderly men of Mediterranean descent.
