Report: Palestinian Abu Abbas in US Custody in Iraq

WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) - Palestinian guerrilla <AKA Terrorist> leader Abu Abbas who masterminded the hijacking of an Italian cruise ship in 1985 was captured by U.S. forces and is in U.S. custody in Baghdad, CNN reported on Tuesday.
Abbas, also known as Mohammed Abbas, is the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Front, which hijacked the Achille Lauro in the eastern Mediterranean, resulting in the death of a disabled elderly American man.

"CNN can now report that Abu Abbas ... has been captured by U.S. forces in or near Baghdad," CNN's national security reporter David Ensor said.

.....U.S. officials said nearly two dozen foreign terror suspects believed to be linked to al Qaeda were killed at a training camp belonging to the group Ansar al-Islam in northern Iraq.

The camp was attacked by coalition air strikes, U.S. Special Forces and Kurdish fighters April 3 near the town of Uraman, in Iraq's northeastern Sulaymaniyah province.

Among the foreign nationals found at the camp were Saudis, Afghans, Moroccans and Algerians who were identified by travel papers, the officials said......

During the war, U.S. forces sought to destroy foreign "terrorist" training centers the Pentagon said was operating inside Iraq, such as the complex at Salman Pak, southeast of Baghdad, raided by U.S. Marines on April 5.

American military officials said the foreign fighters, thought to be well armed, included men from Syria, Egypt, Sudan and other countries. They said foreign fighters were present in some of the early ground engagements in the war after U.S. and British forces punched into Iraq from Kuwait, and that those fighters suffered severe losses in those battles......
