It was perhaps an overstatement to say the military was all patronage, but the real point is that few had any interest in fighting and melted away as quickly as possible.

All the atrocities suffered by the people ....
It isn't very accurate to try to associate the events of a dozen years ago to the present state of Iraq. Much had changed in the interviening time, in particular Saddam had completed his purges, and had little influence in the north.
