Good points. I had in mind "individual" as personal, rather than as a member of a minority group. I think that in order for a society to be successful and prosperous - and happy, if you will - rights of individuals must be respected. I think this is where the focus has to be. Respect for minority groups would be likely to follow.

I do understand that Democracy per se may not do much for the rights of individuals. After all, in Athens - the "mother" of all democracies - the majority of residents were not citizens, but slaves. It was a matter of how they elected (sic! -g) to define a member of the "demos".

(btw, not that it makes a great difference in the scheme of things, but the idea of my handle is "ski", not "skin". I am a skier with nearly 50 years worth of experience... -g.)
