Yours is a good point...unfortunately the liberals attack it with PC and the media follows suit. For example, the whole population (in the eyes of the media) is too stupid to be allowed a voice in such things as abortion, native self government, bilingualism etc. "Direct democracy is good for you as long as it doesn't affect me" "You can have your say as long as I say so" "Free speech is acceptable as long as we approve of it" Above stolen from the Liberal play book :>)

Even if you're a Liberal, you're still disenfranchised really, as you'd have little hope of changing anything in meaningful fashion .... it's just a fact of life, that with millions of individuals the only way to start a political process is to categorise positions into packages .... with a few hundred of these packages, which we call 'parties', you'd have much more chance of finding one to your taste, but they'd all be quite ineffective, at the same time ..... but yes, that was one of the most attractive things to early Reform, there was some sense of an ability to input, not just stand to attention awaiting orders from on high I have zero interest in joining any party, come right down to it ... however, i leave the door open for a party to join me .... it's like this guys - you are either with me or you are against me ;-)
