U.S. shuts off Iraq-Syria oil pipeline

Damascus rejects accusations it harbors Iraqi fugitives

NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES

April 15 — U.S. forces have shut down a pipeline sending oil from Iraq to Syria, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said on Tuesday. The move came after multiple warnings of possible sanctions against Syria from the Bush administration, which accuses Damascus of giving safe haven to remnants of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi government, and of developing weapons of mass destruction. Damascus rejected the accusations, calling the charges “threats and “falsifications.”

Sig,
Am Bullish on iraq as well. Perhaps Saddam's rule actually #1, insulated the iraqi people from the effects of fundamentalism on the arab street and #2, philosophically moved them in a democratic and capitalist direction politically as an alternative to totalitarianism and statism which they suffered under for so many years. We have a whole slew of former communist countries embracing capitalism and democracy but the closest case may in fact be Romania--similar regime that suddenly fell. How is Romania doing--anyone know? mike

I am very optimistic that the Iraqis will catch on to efficient industry. We often leave lots of equipment like bulldozers lying around that they can put to good use.

and used sewing machines don't forget those and old baseball caps that they can resell.
