which is the rough equivalent of saying

the front door is locked. i can't get in. locks can cause a problem with getting in. leave it open so i can get in. after it was left open, i got in.

perhaps the troubleshooting site was suggesting disabling BI as a troubleshooting technique, to identify the problem and to eliminate other possible causes, but not as a permanent solution.

once the troubleshooting process revealed that disabling BI allowed file sharing to occur, the next step should have been to properly configure the firewall, i.e, to make a key that fit the lock (in the above analogy), so that the door is not left wide open.
