You wouldn't need an AMT is not for the bewildering profusion of tax loopholes and 'special tax preference items'.

Get rid of the loopholes AND get rid of the AMT (and then reduce tax rates by at least as much as you have just saved in compliance costs by simplifying the economically corrupting tax codes.)
