Sources: Abu Abbas flees from Baghdad, Syria refuses to allow him to enter

Palestinian leader, Muhammad ‘Abbas (aka Abu Abbas) has fled from his home in Baghdad towards the Syrian border, Palestinian sources Sunday told Quds Press. According to these sources, the Syrian authorities refused to allow him to enter the Syrian territory.

Abbas, a member of the PLO Executive Committee, heads the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF). The Abu Abbas-led faction has conducted several attacks against Israel. Abbas's group also was responsible for the attack in 1985 on the cruise ship Achille Lauro and the killing of a US citizen.

A warrant for Abu Abbas's arrest is outstanding in Italy. Since the Achille Lauro attack, the PLF has based itself in Iraq. (Albawaba.com)

Before its demise, the Iraqi government reported 1,254 civilian deaths as of April 3. The Bush administration has offered no estimates of its own.

We really don't know how many civilian deaths there have been, and we don't know how many of them can be attributed to coalition action, as opposed to action on the part of Iraqi armed forces as they defended themselves," Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said in a BBC interview Sunday.

Iraqi military casualties are thought, conservatively, to number several thousand. But firm numbers are impossible to ascertain because the U.S. military says it makes no attempt to calculate such figures.

The Pentagon's latest American casualty count includes 127 dead and four missing. The British government says 30 British soldiers have died. Neither Iraq nor the coalition has released an estimate of Iraqi military casualties. Iraq says nearly 600 civilians have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded.

The Pentagon listed 118 U.S. troops killed in the war, while Associated Press put the total at 121. The British counted 31 dead. Iraq gave no figures for its military losses, but Reuters news agency said U.S. officials estimated Iraqi military deaths at more than 2,300 in or near Baghdad alone. Reuters said Iraqi civilian casualties were in the thousands.
