I don't see this as Sharon's bidding. When Syria allowed men and equipment in to fight US troops, declared that they wanted to see Hussein win, they asked for this.

Syria is fundamentally a terrorist haven. They have worked with US on the war on terror, but now they have declared sides as far as Washington is concerned. Syria needs a rude awakening.
