energyplay,

some deaths in North America -any in US ?

None in the USA; however now 13 in Canada...

All of the confirmed cases in the USA can be traced back directly to either Hong Kong or China as the infection point. For some as yet unknown reason, the disease has not been spreading in the USA like it has in other countries, for example among medical staff or among the elderly. The most often quoted guess as to why is better medical care in the USA, followed by better hygiene. But both reasons are guesses at best, and perhaps way off the mark at worst. Medical care in Canada is just as adequate as in the USA, yet the disease is spreading in the Asian communities up there. And medical care in Hong Kong is also quite adequate, but the disease is doubling there approximately every 15 days. Of greater concern though, is that the disease is spreading among medical care givers (especially in both China and Hong Kong) at even higher rates, despite extreme precautions taken to protect workers.

Another anomaly of the disease in the USA is that those persons who have fallen victim to SARS and were treated in the USA seem not to suffer the extreme hemorrhaging within the lungs commonly found in other regions where deaths have occurred. One reason ventured forth as a guess is that perhaps the disease is genetic specific in some form, more lethal to the Asian ethnicity than other ethnic groupings. Again though, just a guess...
