It was stated that there would be upfront funding associated with the partnership, and MLNM could book that as revenue.

i believe that the answer is that, yes, upfront funding from V, and other,partnerships were part of the revenue forecast. however, not all the upfront funding is recognized as revenue right away (in 2003)since there are detailed accounting rules which specify how much can be.
