I get purple finches with some frequency at my feeders.
Those very bright yellow finches you described are
Goldfinches. They are male Goldfinches. The not so bright
yellow finches are most likely female Goldfinches.

I have a special feeder for the Goldfinches. It has the
feeder hole below the perch. It is a small hole. The perch
is thin so that only birds with smaller feet can clasp the
perch & hold themselves upside down to feed. This gives a
distinct advantage to Goldfinch as they are among the
smaller birds around.

The reason for the small hole is that it is designed to
dispense niger seed (also called thistle). It is a tiny,
narrow seed.

Goldfinch absolutely love niger seed. Actually most birds
love it. It's a bit expensive though & birds will plow
through it over most other seeds.

I have a feeder for my Goldfinch because they are small &
most other birds will chase them away from my other feeders.
