There are a number of studies (sorry, read them long ago and don't have references) that learning or dealing with a foreign language has one of the biggest influences on keeping mental capacity.
Some huge correlation between knowing more than one language and living over 90 years.

Exercise, physical motion, and novelty/variety also help.

Interestingly it is unclear as to what is "using" it... lots of people worry about things all day long [anxiety] and they'll swear to you they're using it more than anyone.
