Perhaps I didn't quite make my position clear on the Pinochet dictatorship. I was commenting on the economic results of the coup d'etat, not the criminal nature of the operation. I believe Pinochet to be guilty of crimes against humanity, and that the British government was remiss in not turning Pinochet over to the Spanish courts when the opportunity presented itself.

In the same vein, I've read Christopher Hitchens' "The Trial of Henry Kissinger",

and I'm basically in agreement with Hitchens that Kissinger is indeed a war criminal. Implicated in anti-democratic and murderous complicity in Chile, East Timor, Cambodia and elsewhere.
