France had already been conquered by Germans, previous to our liberating it. Liberation becomes a bit more problematic, especially in terms of international law, when you liberate a people from their own indigenous government. They have every right to liberate themselves from their government, but it's a hairy mess to set precedents for outsiders to do it, imo. In this case it might work out to the good, but that is far from certain, and the precedents set were so bad, imo, they do not justify our actions.

The differences were not obvious at the time.

Hitler liberated the oppressed people of the Sudetenland, was greeted by cheering crowds in the newly liberated Austria, and warmly greeted by the Vichy government of France.

America now has the chance to see those events from the other side of the looking glass.

The differences appear to be one of style and symbols, not deeds.
