I tend to agree with you; however, if "a few airlines go under" that will be a lot of jobs lost. I am not sure how well the economy could take that lose right now.

Its not a net loss. If you subsidize X you have to take away from Y. Its not new money. It either gets taxed away from individuals who will then spend or invest less, or it gets taxed away from companies who are using the resources more profitably, or it gets added to are growing deficit.


In theory, you're right but in practice there first is a loss of the jobs and then over time, there may be new jobs to replace the old ones. And that doesn't mean the guy who was trained to work with the airlines can work in the new job. There will be economic dislocations no matter how well the transition is thought out and the economy will be negatively impacted during the transition.
