Who really cares if it was 5.9 million or 6.2 or even 5 million. Did you know that the Nazis killed an estimated 10 million. Obviously, many millions were NOT Jews. Such a catastrophe as you call it is the real reason for Israel's existence. Most Jews in US and even in Israel do not support the extreme views of the Orthodoxy and work towards a more egalitarian society. However, all governments have serious flaws. Compared to the others in the ME, Israel is head and shoulders above from a pragmatic approach to human rights, equality and fair treatment of its citizens. I would say the exact same thing for our government. Although flawed, it has shown its character in these times and I am very proud to be an American. Does that mean that one does not try to change a government? Of course not. However, in Iraq, Syrian, Arafat controllled lands, Saudi Arabia, etc., there is no open debate. I'm not sure you get the degree of difference involved. I don't support preferential laws for Orthodox. In fact, I think many border on the fanaticism of the Ayatollahs. However, I recognize that Israel needs its existence because of the holocaust and as a safety valve. If it's an emotional argument, then the cost justifies it. It truly amazes me how the haters can get so worked up about such a tiny piece of land, most of which was barren wasteland before 1948 while there is so much land in the hands of billionaires in Arab lands. As I've suggested, most Arabs and Jews want a peaceful existence and really don't care about ancient edicts. The leaders of the Arab nations have used the Palestinians as a method of unification, realizing that without the Jews, the Arabs would be killing each other. Without a common "enemey," the billionaires would not remain in power.
