OK, I'd prefer it if you take this issue to PM. Clearly China underreported at one stage, but they now seem somewhat more cooperative and my guess is that at some point in the near future we will get the full story from them (to the extent they know it themselves, that is).

Any statistics we see until a good rapid test becomes available are going to be somewhat suspect. Distinguishing on a clinical basis between a death from SARS and one from complications of 'flu or RSV is just not possible. It should be remembered that we get 50-60k deaths a year from 'flu in the US (and another 15k from RSV), mostly elderly that succumb to a pneumonia very similar in clinical presentation to SARS. Thus reported deaths from countries that don't or can't test for 'flu or RSV may get included in the SARS statistics.
