The bird reservoir thesis is pretty well accepted. Many of the early SARS cases in China were with people selling birds. Bird related diseases tend to start in Central US, Central Europe, and Southern China, all on bird migration paths and with lots of agricultural production and animals close to humans. These areas (and sub-Saharan Africa) are closely monitored by epidemiollogists (sp).
