Darleen > Very negative for gold as well as SA, I am so sorry

Thank you but don't be.

(a) I'm out of gold

(b) Although still an important export for SA, gold is not nearly as important as it used to be. In 1970, SA produced 2/3rds of the world's gold but today only about 17% (1/6th). In other words, SA gold production is now only about half of what it was 30 years ago.

goldsheetlinks.com

The excellent histogram about half way down the page shows the world's total production since 1970 and SA's contribution to it. Also a salutary reminder to note that world gold production has doubled since 1980 and also how widely distributed throughout the world that production is.

You may not be aware of it but since about 2000 platinum has been a more important export for SA than gold.
