I'll vote for any party, provided its leaders do not automatically tow the line with U.S. policy. Polls show that the majority of Canadians do not support the war, simply because this war is based on a new American "doctrine" of isolationalism and unilateral action. It can be summed up simply "we have the military might, and we do what we damn please". If you'd listened to the interview given by Richard Perle on CBC (Perle and Wolfowitz are the two main architects of the new doctrine), Mr. Perle was very straightforward in describing the Bush doctrine. America is no longer interested in international organizations such as U.N., NATO, World Court. America does what it pleases because it is the super power. It is the "either you're with us, or you're against us" doctrine. The interviewer asked Perle what would America do to those countries that do not buy in America's vision of the new world order? He said, "we keep them at a distance." History has shown that a vision of isolationist, world supermacy, is exactly how world wars were started. Germany viewed itself as the superior race and superior military power in the second world war. The Bush doctrine could lead to Russia, North Korea, and China, embarrassed and threatened, to form a new military alliance to start another arms race so as not to be left behind the Americans. A combined military force of Russia, North Korea, China, have millions of soldiers whose lives are considered worthless by their leaders. Compare this to America, where there is a teary affair for each soldier lost. Imagine if China, Russia, and North Korea with their millions of soldiers are armed with nuclear weapons to take on America. If America continues with this doctrine of "with us or against us", acting alone irregardless of international agencies, don't be surprised if these countries start an opposing military alliance. This American "grand adventure" invading Iraq could be the demise of U.N. NATO, and International Law. While these world organizations are imperfect, because of them the world has had some resemblance of law and order, and we have all enjoyed the longest period of world peace in history. We live in a dangerous world now... . a world super power prepared to act on its own. What will it lead to? Coalitions of the willing. So countries supporting America's new doctrine will be on one side, and countries against the new doctrine on the other side. The perfect recipe for armageddon and the end of the world. That's why I'm glad that Canada has taken a stance to be neutral in the Bush doctrine. We may gripe about the imperfections of our Federal Government with its Provincial governing systems, and provinces like Quebec and Alberta may long to separate, and yet, the truth is... we live a good life here in Canada. Survey after survey shows that Canada is one of the best country in the world to live in. American adventurism under the Bush doctrine may just end this.
