Yes, it would have been extremely difficult, but not impossible to keep a lid on it if in fact they were responsible....
I remember as a young teenager the stories of strange things happening at sea sailors who served on ships would tell me, but they did manage to keep a lid on it anyway. Then of course the sailors could have been lying. In any case, if a US ship was involved in the downing of flight 800, only a few close family members of the people on board would know the real story, and of course they would be scared out of their wits to say anything about it to the media or others. Fear of humiliation or retaliation by the government or one's employer plays a huge part in our so-called free country where the truth should always ring loud and clear but of course does not....
